Update 8/1, 10:30 am: Burke is reopening its mountain biking trails today following a heavy batch of rainfall. The information from us below was written yesterday.
East Burke, Vermont – When it rains this summer in the Northeast Kingdom, it pours.
After a batch of rain earlier this month led to significant flooding in the Northeast Kingdom, another round of heavy downpours on Monday night wreaked havoc in many of the towns that had seen flooding beforehand. Many homes were damaged, and many local roads were washed out.
Henry’s Weather Channel captured drone footage of the damage, showing washouts throughout these communities.
Some communities in the Northeast Kingdom received four to eight inches of rain. Vermont Public Radio reports that at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium’s weather station in St. Johnsbury, 7.96 inches of rain fell, a single-day record for the area.
This rainfall resulted in one of the Kingdom’s ski resorts temporarily shutting down its mountain biking trails. Burke Mountain, which only opened for lift-serviced mountain biking last Friday due to mechanical issues with the Sherburne Express chairlift, has closed its hiking and biking trails until further notice. The biking trails did sustain damage due to the heavy rain, so repairs are needed. However, work to repair the trail network has commenced. The Burke Mountain Road & Conference Center and Summit Road remain open.
Unfortunately for the Northeast Kingdom and the rest of Vermont, more heavy rain is expected today. With these developments and last year’s flooding in Vermont, some wonder if this is the new normal.
