Crowdfunding Campaign Saves Scottish Ski Area

Corgarff, United Kingdom — If your ski area is on the verge of closing, what should you do? One idea is to launch a crowdfunding campaign, as a ski area in Scotland did a few months ago.

Back in May, Lecht 2090 announced that it was on the brink of closure. Lecht Ski Centre launched a public crowdfunding campaign to remain open for next winter. If they raised £35,000 GBP or more (nearly $44,000) through lift ticket sales, they’d operate next winter. If not, the ski area, which has been around since the 1970s, could have closed for good.

This week, Lect 2090 announced that their funding campaign was officially over, meaning that they’ll be open for skiing and riding next winter. This was thanks to people who helped them raise the amount of funds needed to remain operational. The JustGiving platform helped them raise £18,055 from 476 patrons, while they raised the rest of the funds from people purchasing lift tickets on their website.

This past winter was brutal for them, as a lack of snow resulted in limited open terrain and financial losses. Still, though, Chairman Pieter du Pon said that they were able to create some positives from a disappointing season:

“Even in this dire season, using the advances in modern snow making technology we have still managed to put over 6,500 children onto our slopes to enjoy the experience that snowsports has to offer…We do not want to be forced to shut down the centre and so I would like to ask if you could help by just buying one lift pass, or more, as a donation, so we can continue into 2025.”

This quality news reminds us that there’s no group out there quite like the skiing and riding community. Cheerio!
