Hawaii — While it is regarded for its tropical beauty, Hawaii also has tall peaks. In the wintertime, snowfall occurs on the state’s highest peak, Mauna Kea. Situated 13,803 feet above sea level, the dormant volcano is the tallest peak in Hawaii. Technically, it’s the tallest mountain in the world, with it being more than 33,500 feet tall if you consider its starting point in the Pacific Ocean. Ultimately, this means that skiing and snowboarding are possible in Hawaii.
On Sunday, Mauna Kea saw its first snowfall of the 2024-25 season. The Center for Maunakea Stewardship, which is run by the University of Hawaiʻi, shared the news.
On Monday, The Center for Maunakea Stewardship announced that they had received two inches of snowfall.
By Tuesday, most of the snow had melted.
While it was probably not enough to shred on without wrecking your skis, it’s an exciting sign that winter is coming, even for Hawaii.
