Colorado- Berthoud Pass is perhaps Colorado’s most famous abandoned ski area.
Berthoud Pass first opened as a rope tow in 1937 and continued to grow in the following decades. The ski area became known for its steep terrain and being the first ski area in Colorado to allow snowboarders.
Unfortunately, the ski area experienced multiple closures, eventually shutting down the lifts for good in 2001. A snowcat operation followed, but it closed in 2003. However, this closure didn’t shut the book on Berthoud Pass’s life and legacy.
Since its closure, Berthoud Pass has remained a popular spot for backcountry skiers and riders. As shown by the video above from Colorado Camera, many runs are still in great shape for skiing and riding, making it a worthwhile spot on a powder day.
It should be noted that Berthoud Pass is in the backcountry. Please bring the appropriate gear in backcountry environments, like a beacon, probe, and shovel.
