Glenwood Springs, Colorado — The oldest chairlift in Colorado will spin for one final season before it heads off into the sunset.
Last week, Sunlight Mountain Resort announced that they’ll replace two lifts in 2025. The first lift replacement will be the Segundo chairlift. This old fixed-grip double chairlift, which started its life at Aspen Mountain in 1954, will be replaced by a fixed-grip triple chairlift. It will replaced by the old Lenawee Triple chairlift from Arapahoe Basin. According to Colorado Public Radio, the capacity will go from 970 guests per hour to 1,400.
The Primo chairlift, which has been at Sunlight since 1966, will be replaced by a new fixed-grip quad chairlift. The old Primo chairlift currently has a ride time of 12 minutes, and the new lift will hurt up the journey. The Primo chairlift services the summit of Sunlight.
The U.S. Forest Service must approve the projects, but Garfield County has already provided support.
Events are planned to commemorate Primo and Segundo’s retirement. After they close the chairlifts, they plan to sell off parts from both.
The one head-scratcher about the announcement was that the Segundo chairlift was originally scheduled to be replaced this offseason. I contacted Sunlight for comment regarding the delay but have yet to receive a response.
